Claude or ChatGPT: which one to choose for work in 2026?

Comparison published on October 10, 2026. Features and prices are from the official Anthropic and OpenAI pages consulted on that day; tests were conducted on the same day in both interfaces, with the same prompts, on a Claude Max account (Opus 5.5, medium effort) and a professional ChatGPT workspace (GPT-6, medium thinking).

Claude or ChatGPT? By October 2026, both assistants know how to write, analyze documents, search the web, produce Excel or PowerPoint files and carry out long tasks independently. The difference no longer lies in what they can do, but in how they do it: ChatGPT clearly separates conversation (Chat) from delegated work (Work) and excels in source-driven research and multimedia; Claude has merged conversation and delegation into a single interface and is more attentive to context and verifying its output. The right choice depends primarily on your needs and the existing ecosystem within your organization.

The verdict in five lines

  • Professional writing and long documents: Claude has the advantage, being more attentive to the details of the context and the instructions for form.
  • Sourced web search: ChatGPT had the advantage, as they directly cited official sources in our test.
  • Excel and PowerPoint files: equality; both deliver a downloadable file with formulas.
  • Images, voice and video: ChatGPT has the advantage of offering a wider range of multimedia content.
  • Delegation of complete works: equality in principle (ChatGPT Work on one side, Claude with Cowork integrated on the other hand), with different philosophies detailed below.

Three tests on real office tasks

We presented the exact same prompt to both assistants, in their default professional account configuration, with an average level of thought on both sides. Three tests do not constitute a benchmark: they show differences in behavior, not a definitive ranking.

Test 1: Produce an Excel file with formulas and a graph

Create an Excel file to track the 2027 training budget: 4 quarters in columns, 5 expense rows (training, engineering, travel, licenses, rooms) with example amounts, totals per row and per quarter calculated using formulas, and a stacked bar chart. Send me the file to download.
  • ChatGPT delivered the .xlsx file in 31 seconds and opened it in a spreadsheet preview alongside the conversation, allowing users to check the result without downloading anything.
  • Claude He delivered the same type of file, specifying that he had recalculated the workbook and verified that no formula returned an error. He summarized the key figures (annual total, busiest quarter, largest expense) and indicated that the editable cells were highlighted in blue.

Balance sheet: Both meet the requirements. ChatGPT is more convenient for reviewing the file within the interface; Claude provides more detailed documentation of his actions and verifications.

Test 2: A regulatory question with sources

From what date does Article 4 of the AI Act (AI control) apply to businesses, and what penalties are provided for non-compliance? Answer in 5 lines maximum, with your sources.
  • ChatGPT gave the correct dates (application since February 2, 2025, control by national authorities since August 2, 2026) and directly cited two official sources: the European Commission's FAQ and Article 99 on the AI Act helpline.
  • Claude It gave the same dates but added an important nuance: the 2026 "digital omnibus" regulation transformed the obligation into an obligation of means. Its sources, however, were the websites of consulting firms and service providers, not official texts.

Balance sheet: ChatGPT provides a more verifiable answer, while Claude's is more complete. In both cases, when discussing legal matters, explicitly request official sources.

Test 3: A delicate email to a client

Write a 120-word email to inform a client that the November 15th training session has been postponed by one week due to the trainer's unavailability. Offer two alternative dates. The tone should be professional and friendly, without excessive apologies.
  • ChatGPT He wrote a clear and well-structured email, presented in a card ready to be sent. He proposed Friday the 20th and Monday the 23rd of November: the first date does not respect the requested one-week difference.
  • Claude noticed that November 15, 2026 falls on a Sunday, pointed this out, and suggested Monday, November 23 and Tuesday, November 24, two working days of the following week. The email was also presented in a card with a Gmail send button.

Balance sheet: Both emails are usable, but Claude took the actual calendar into account better. This is exactly the kind of detail that makes all the difference on tasks that are repeated throughout the day.

Chat and Work on one side, a single interface on the other

This is the most noticeable difference in use. ChatGPT displays two modes at the top of the screen: Chat to converse, Work to delegate a lengthy task (research, analysis, creation of documents, spreadsheets, or presentations). Work can use your connected applications, a browser, and, on the desktop application, your local files; it can also run at a fixed time or be triggered by an event, such as the arrival of an email. The latest models (GPT-6.1 Sol) are only available in Work.

Claude made the opposite choice: since September 16, 2026, Cowork and the conversation becomes one. You submit your request in the same place, and Claude decides whether to respond directly or launch a longer project, utilizing your files, connectors, and skills. The work continues even if you close your computer and can be scheduled to recur. For a detailed comparison of delegation methods, see our Claude comparison CoworkCopilot Cowork and ChatGPT Work.

What one does and the other does not

Only in ChatGPT

  • Integrated image generation, on all offers.
  • Voice chat with video, starting from the Go offer.
  • Tasks triggered by an event (new email, Slack message, GitHub activity) in Work.
  • The "Sites", web pages generated from ChatGPT, from Plus.

Only in Claude

  • A context window with up to 1 million tokens available in the free offer, useful for analyzing several long documents at once.
  • Connectors to your tools are included in the free offer.
  • Claude in Microsoft 365 and in Chrome, starting with the Pro offer.
  • A single interface where conversation and delegation become one.

Which assistant should you choose based on your needs?

Your main useOur recommendation
Writing, rewriting, and summarizing long documentsClaude
Web monitoring and sourced researchChatGPT
Visuals, images, voice contentChatGPT
Data analysis, spreadsheets, presentationsBoth, to be tested on your files
Teams already on Microsoft 365Also compare with Copilot, which is already included in the tools
Delegating lengthy tasksBoth; Claude if you want a single interface, ChatGPT if you prefer to separate conversation and work

In many organizations, the question isn't "one or the other" but "which one first?" Since team pricing is identical, the deciding factor becomes which tool your teams will actually adopt, and which your IT department can secure. To choose the right model within each assistant, see our article The right AI model for each task.

And what about Copilot, Gemini, and The Cat?

Microsoft 365 Copilot remains the natural choice when company data resides in Outlook, Teams, and SharePoint; Gemini plays the same role in Google Workspace (see our comparison). Gemini or ChatGPT) ; The Mistral Cat meets the requirements of sovereignty. F.A.Q

Claude or ChatGPT: which is better?

Neither excels in every area. In October 2026, Claude demonstrates greater attention to context and writing quality, while ChatGPT is stronger in sourced research and multimedia. Both produce office files and are capable of handling lengthy tasks.

Claude vs ChatGPT: which one costs less?

The prices are almost identical: $20 per month for both Claude Pro and ChatGPT Plus, and $25 per seat per month ($20 annually) for both Claude Team and ChatGPT Business. Claude Pro is slightly cheaper with an annual payment plan ($17 per month).

ChatGPT or Claude for analyzing long documents?

Claude, thanks to a context window of up to 1 million tokens on all his offers, compared to 256,000 tokens in reflection mode on ChatGPT Plus and 400,000 on ChatGPT Pro.

Is my data being used to train the models?

On the individual plans from both publishers, training is enabled by default but can be disabled in the settings. On the team and enterprise plans (Claude Team and Enterprise, ChatGPT Business and Enterprise), the publishers commit to not training their models on your data. See also our article on Claude's safety and compliance in the workplace.

Can both be used?

Yes, and this is common among advanced users: ChatGPT for searching and visuals, Claude for writing and analyzing documents. In a corporate environment, however, it's better to deploy a primary tool to centralize support and governance.
