Gemini or ChatGPT: which one to choose in 2026?

Comparison published on October 10, 2026, compiled from the official Google and OpenAI pages consulted that day (offers, prices, usage limits, release notes). Prices are those displayed by the publishers; they may vary depending on the country and VAT.

Gemini or ChatGPT? In October 2026, the two assistants cover the essential office needs: writing, summarizing, in-depth research, file analysis, image generation. The real deciding factor lies elsewhere. Gemini is designed to work within the Google ecosystem: Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Drive, Meet, and it's included in most Google Workspace subscriptions. ChatGPT is a standalone tool, independent of any office suite, and more advanced for delegating lengthy tasks with its Work mode. If your company uses Google Workspace, Gemini has a head start; otherwise, ChatGPT remains the most versatile choice.

The verdict in five lines

  • You are on Google Workspace: Gemini, already integrated into your tools and included in the Business Standard subscription.
  • You are on Microsoft 365 or without a mandatory office suite: ChatGPT, independent and connectable to many applications.
  • Very long documents: Gemini has the advantage, with 1 million context tokens available from the Google AI Pro offer.
  • Delegating entire tasks: Advantage of ChatGPT, whose Work mode is available on web, mobile and desktop.
  • Video and images: Gemini has the advantage for video (Veo, Flow); both are solid for image.

The decisive argument: the ecosystem

Comparing Gemini and ChatGPT as two chatbots misses the real difference. Gemini is primarily a feature of Google Workspace. In the Business Standard plan, it summarizes a Gmail thread, drafts a first version in Docs, creates a table in Sheets, and relies solely on content the user already has access to. For a company already equipped with these tools, there are no additional tools to deploy or subscriptions to add.

ChatGPT, on the other hand, is a standalone tool. It doesn't replace any desktop applications, but it connects to the ones you already use, whether they're from Google, Microsoft, or elsewhere. This is an advantage for organizations that juggle multiple environments, and an additional cost for those that have already paid for Gemini with Workspace.

For companies using Microsoft 365, the choice is more between ChatGPT and Copilot: see our page Which AI tool should you choose for your profession?

Delegating work: ChatGPT is ahead of the curve

ChatGPT now separates into two modes: Chat to converse and Work to delegate a lengthy task. Work produces documents, spreadsheets, presentations, or reports, uses your connected applications and a browser, and can run at a fixed time or be triggered by an event (a new email, a Slack message). This mode is available on the web, mobile, and desktop application.

On the Google side, the building blocks exist but remain more scattered: automatic browsing in Chrome on the Pro plan, Gemini Spark persistent agent on Pro and Ultra in certain countries only, priority access to agent mode on Ultra, and Workspace Studio agents to automate workflows between Google applications. For an overview of delegation tools, see our Claude comparison CoworkCopilot Cowork and ChatGPT Work.

Long documents, research and multimedia

  • Long documents: With 1 million context tokens on Google AI Pro, Gemini can process a significantly larger volume of documents at once than the 256,000 tokens of ChatGPT Plus's reflection mode.
  • In-depth research: Gemini makes Deep Research available to all its plans, including the free one. ChatGPT limits it to the free plan and extends it to the Plus plan and above.
  • Images: Both generate and edit images across all their offerings.
  • Video: Gemini generates videos starting with the Plus plan, using Veo 3.1 on Ultra and the Flow tool. ChatGPT does not mention video generation in its offerings.

Prices, offer by offer

For individual use, Google AI Pro ($19,99 per month) and ChatGPT Plus ($20) are similarly priced. Google's offering also includes 5TB of storage and, in some countries, YouTube Premium Lite, making it more attractive to individuals. Google also offers an entry-level plan, Google AI Plus, for $4,99.

In a business context, the comparison takes on a different character. Gemini is included in Google Workspace: the Business Standard plan, priced at €13,60 per user per month in France (excluding promotional offers), includes Gemini in Gmail, Docs, Sheets, and Meet, as well as the Gemini app. ChatGPT Business costs $25 per seat per month ($20 annually), in addition to the office suite you already use.

Which assistant should you choose based on your situation?

F.A.Q

Gemini or ChatGPT: which is better?

Neither is superior in every aspect. Gemini is the best choice within the Google ecosystem and for very long documents; ChatGPT is more versatile and more advanced in delegating complete tasks.

Gemini vs ChatGPT: which is cheaper?

For individuals, Google AI Pro ($19,99) and ChatGPT Plus ($20) are comparable, but Google adds 5TB of storage. For businesses already using Google Workspace, Gemini is included in the Business Standard subscription, while ChatGPT Business is an additional cost.

Is the free version of Gemini sufficient?

For occasional use, yes: it provides access to Deep Research and image generation. However, its context window (32,000 tokens) limits the analysis of long documents, and its usage limits are among the lowest.

Is my data protected?

For enterprise offerings, the same applies on both sides: Google states that Workspace data is not used to train its models or for advertising, and that Gemini only accesses content already available to the user; OpenAI commits to not training its models on data from a Business Workspace. For consumer offerings, check the privacy settings of each service.

Can Gemini be used without Google Workspace?

Yes, with just a Google account and the Gemini app, either free or with a Google AI subscription. But integration with Gmail, Docs, and Sheets for professional use requires Google Workspace.
