Claude Cowork Which one to choose in 2026: ChatGPT Work or ChatGPT?

Comparison published on November 1, 2026, compiled from the help centers and official announcements of Anthropic and OpenAI consulted that day. We use Claude Cowork On a daily basis, including for producing our training deliverables; for ChatGPT Work, we rely on OpenAI documentation and feedback from our clients who have deployed it. Both products evolve weekly.

Short answer: at the same entry price ($20 per month for individuals, $25 per seat per month for teams), choose Claude Cowork If you want a single interface where conversation becomes delegation, tasks that run in the cloud without a computer being on, and a detailed record of each step, choose ChatGPT Work. This is especially true if your teams already live in ChatGPT, if you need event-triggered tasks, and if you have access to the largest catalog of plugins. In terms of the quality of deliverables, neither clearly dominates: both produce documents, spreadsheets and presentations from your files, and both require human review.

Both tools deliver on the same promise: to entrust AI with an objective rather than a question, and let it follow the steps to the final product. They achieve this with two different philosophies, which matter more in everyday practice than the power of the models themselves.

The verdict in five lines

  • Interface: Claude's advantage Cowork For simplicity, with a single space where Claude himself decides to launch a task; ChatGPT separates Chat mode and Work mode.
  • Execution without a computer: Claude's advantage Coworkwhose new tasks run in the cloud by default and continue even when the computer is closed.
  • Automating : The advantage of ChatGPT Work is that it adds event-based triggers, such as the arrival of an email, to scheduled tasks.
  • Integrations: ChatGPT Work has the advantage in terms of the number of plugins; Claude has the advantage. Cowork in depth once a connector is installed.
  • Governance : equality on Enterprise offerings, with a compliance API, role-based controls, and approvals on both sides.

Claude Cowork And ChatGPT Work: what are we talking about?

Claude Cowork This is Claude's delegation function, launched by Anthropic in January 2026. You describe the expected result, specify the sources (files, folders, connected tools), and Claude plans and then executes the steps: search, analysis, and file production. Available since September 16, 2026 on Pro and Max plans, and since October 23, 2026 on Enterprise plans, Cowork It is no longer a separate mode: it is integrated into every conversation.

ChatGPT Work is OpenAI's work agent, launched on July 9, 2026. It's opened via the Work button at the top of ChatGPT, where you choose a project, plugins, a template, and an effort level. It gathers information from your applications, produces documents, spreadsheets, presentations, or web pages, and can work for several hours on a single task. It shares the technology of Codex, OpenAI's code agent.

One interface or two: the difference that's visible every day

This is the first thing that participants in our training courses notice. In ChatGPTBefore starting, you must choose: Chat mode for a question, Work mode for a task. The choice is explicit, which reassures cautious users, but a conversation that turns into a real task requires starting over in the other mode. The most recent models, such as GPT-6.1 Sol, are only available in Work and Codex modes.

In ClaudeThere are no more choices to be made. A conversation begins as an exchange, and Claude automatically switches to a task in the cloud when the request requires files, code, or multiple steps. Chats, projects, connectors, and skills remain in the same place. The novice user doesn't need to know what Cowork to use it; the advanced user retains control by requesting a plan before execution.

Both tools offer a planning mode: the agent presents their strategy, you validate or correct it, and then they execute it. This is a good habit to adopt from the very first delegations, regardless of the tool.

Where the agent works: cloud, desktop, and browser

Since October 6, 2026, on the Pro and Max plans, any new task Cowork It runs in the Anthropic cloud: each session gets its own virtual machine, which is deleted when it's finished. Your files remain on your computer, and Claude accesses them through the desktop application when it's open. A task launched from the desktop can then be tracked from the web or mobile device, and scheduled tasks run even if no device is turned on, as long as they don't require local files. On Team, cloud execution is enabled by default; on Enterprise, the administrator enables it.

ChatGPT Work operates on two distinct platforms. On the web and mobile devices, it works on OpenAI servers and only accesses connected services. On the desktop application (Windows and macOS), it can interact with local files and folders, control a browser, and take control of the computer. Since OpenAI's DevDay on September 29, 2026, a task initiated on a desktop computer can be resumed on the web or mobile device, provided the computer remains online for the local steps.

Regarding action control, both developers take the same cautious approach. ChatGPT Work requests permission by default before executing a command outside of the workspace or accessing the internet, with more autonomous levels that can be activated manually. Claude Cowork requires validation for each write action of a connector, unless the administrator allows permanent approval, which is disabled by default on Team and Enterprise.

Connectors, plugins and skills

The two tools distinguish three building blocks: the connector provides access to a tool (messaging, CRM, document storage), the skill describes a procedure to follow, and the Plugin combines the two into one installable package.

ChatGPT Work Focus on scope: a unified directory of several hundred plugins, which are referenced with a simple "@" in the request, and the option to add an MCP server for an internal tool. Quality varies from one third-party plugin to another, making it essential to test the ones you rely on.

Claude Cowork Focus on depth: fewer connectors, but deep integrations with the most widely used enterprise tools. The Microsoft 365 connector searches SharePoint, OneDrive, and Outlook, and can send emails or modify files with administrator permission (since July 2026); Salesforce launched in beta on September 15, 2026. Skills, written or recorded demonstrating a procedure, are grouped into plugins that the administrator can make available, mandatory, or prohibited by group. Our Claude Plugins Kit shows how to build one for your team.

Scheduled tasks and triggers

Both tools can repeat a task at a fixed time: summarizing important emails each morning, conducting competitive intelligence on Mondays, and providing progress updates on Fridays. With Claude, the scheduled task is linked to the project, which contains its documents and instructions, and is executed in the cloud.

ChatGPT Work goes a step further in one respect: a task can be triggered by an event (the arrival of an email, a message in a channel, a monitored change on a page). On the Enterprise platform, the "Team Tasks" announced at DevDay run on a team service account rather than an individual account. For a process that needs to react continuously, this is currently ChatGPT Work's most significant advantage.

Both companies are also testing persistent agents that monitor your tools and proactively request your input: OpenAI's "dots," which are being rolled out gradually, and Anthropic's Claude Duet, available in research preview since October 21, 2026, and reserved for Pro and Max subscribers in the United States. Neither is yet a tool ready for enterprise deployment.

Deliverables: files, pages, and presentations

Both tools produce downloadable Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files. The differences lie in what comes alongside them. ChatGPT Work opens a spreadsheet preview alongside the conversation and generates "Sites," which are hosted web pages. At launch, Sites were not available in the European Economic Area; check their availability for your workspace. Claude produces Artifacts published as web pages, shareable within the organization, and, since September 16, 2026, has included Docs, Slides, and Design in every conversation (in beta on Enterprise).

In our experience, Claude documents his work more thoroughly: he specifies the checks performed (recalculated formulas, cross-referencing sources) and indicates what still needs to be verified. This is invaluable for reviewing a multi-page deliverable. ChatGPT Work generally requires fewer interventions along the way. In both cases, consider the first deliverable as an advanced draft, not a final version.

A common area of concern: prompt injection. An agent reading web pages, emails, or external documents may encounter hidden instructions that attempt to hijack it. Both vendors acknowledge this in their documentation and recommend limiting access to the web and sensitive files, and monitoring actions. For Claude-specific compliance issues, see our article. Claude's Safety and Compliance in Business.

Price and usage limits

Ni Cowork Neither Work nor other features are sold separately: they are included in the subscription and draw from the same resource pool as the rest of the tool. At Claude's, a task Cowork It consumes the same quota as the conversation and Claude Code, with a five-hour limit per session and a weekly limit. At OpenAI, Work shares its quota with Codex, and long tasks consume more. In both cases, these are the most resource-intensive functions: a user who delegates several long tasks per day will quickly reach the limit of an entry-level plan.

For heavy users, both providers offer higher tiers (Claude Max at $100 or $200, ChatGPT Pro starting at $100) and, for teams, premium seats at $125 per month with both. Usage credits allow users to continue playing after the limit is reached, with pay-as-you-go up to a cap.

Which one to choose depending on your situation

Your situationOur recommendation
Your teams already use ChatGPT on a daily basis.ChatGPT Work: the context, projects, and habits are already there.
You're starting out and want the simplest tool for non-specialists.Claude Cowork One single interface, no mode to choose from
You want tasks that run at night, with the computer turned off.Claude Cowork, thanks to default cloud execution
You automate reactions to events (emails, messages)ChatGPT Work, thanks to triggers
Your information system combines many SaaS toolsChatGPT Work for the scope of plugins, to be tested tool by tool
You want to industrialize the know-how of a teamClaude Cowork, for skills and plugins managed by the administrator
Your organization lives in Microsoft 365 with CopilotCompare also with Copilot Cowork, already integrated into your tenant

The deciding factor remains whether your teams will actually adopt it. A slightly less powerful tool that's used daily is better than a superior one that no one ever opens. To compare the two assistants beyond delegation, see our comparison. Claude or ChatGPT for work.

And Copilot Cowork ?

For organizations equipped with Microsoft 365 Copilot (the license some call "Copilot Premium"), Copilot Cowork is a third serious contender: it works with Anthropic templates, within the Microsoft 365 tenant, with identity, auditing, and data protection already in place. It is billed in Copilot credits in addition to the license. Our Claude comparison CoworkCopilot Cowork and ChatGPT Work compare the three, and our article Difference between Copilot Cowork and Claude Cowork details the Microsoft-Anthropic duel.

How to test both in one week

Rather than relying on comparisons, including this one, the safest approach is a short test on your own tasks. The method we use with our clients:

  1. Choose three real-life missions, of increasing difficulty: a synthesis of documents, a quantified deliverable (a tracking table, a report), a recurring task to plan.
  2. Write an identical request for both tools, with the same objective, the same files and the same expected format.
  3. Assign each task to two or three testers. of different professions, on a team account for each tool.
  4. Note four criteria : quality of deliverable, number of interventions required, total time, ease of verifying the result.
  5. Review the governance with the IT department : necessary connectors, traceability, data concerned.

To save time, our free library offers ready-to-copy tasks that launch in both tools, such as the annotated monthly report, and our page Claude Cowork Examples of tasks by profession gives one per function.

F.A.Q

Claude Cowork Which is better: ChatGPT Work or ChatGPT?

None of them dominates everything. In November 2026, Claude Cowork ChatGPT Work stands out for its unique interface, its cloud-based, off-computer operation, and its detailed activity log. ChatGPT Work distinguishes itself with its event-driven triggers and extensive plugin support. Both deliverables are comparable in quality and require review.

What is the equivalent of Claude? Cowork at ChatGPT?

This is ChatGPT Work, launched by OpenAI on July 9, 2026. It is opened via the Work button at the top of ChatGPT and allows, as Cowork, to entrust a complete objective to AI, which then links the steps until the deliverable.

Claude Cowork Are ChatGPT Work free?

Claude Cowork This feature is not available in Claude's free plan; it requires at least the Pro subscription, at $20 per month. ChatGPT Work is accessible in a limited way in the free plan, on the desktop application, and fully accessible starting with ChatGPT Plus, at $20 per month.

Should you leave your computer on?

With Claude CoworkNo: tasks run in the cloud and continue even when the computer is closed, unless they require files or tools located on the machine. With ChatGPT Work, tasks launched on the web do not need to be on the computer, but those using the desktop application require the computer to remain online for local steps.

Can they be used with Microsoft 365?

Yes, both. Claude uses his Microsoft 365 connector (SharePoint, OneDrive, Outlook), and ChatGPT Work uses its SharePoint and Teams plugins. If your organization already has Microsoft 365 Copilot, Copilot Cowork offers more native integration.

Is my data being used to train the models?

Not on Team and Enterprise plans: Anthropic (Team, Enterprise) and OpenAI (Business, Enterprise) are committed to not training their models on your data. On individual plans, training can be disabled in the settings.
