Copilot Usage Analysis Kit: Diagnose your organization's adoption
Upload the exports from the Microsoft 365 admin center: the analyzer calculates the diagnosis of your Copilot licenses in seconds, compares your strategies, tracks changes month-over-month, and proposes an action plan for each user. Your files remain in your browser.
The Copilot usage analyzer, in brief
- What it is
- An online tool that transforms exports from the Copilot usage report of the Microsoft 365 admin center into an adoption diagnostic: strengths, weaknesses, comparison of directions, evolution over time and action plan for each person.
- For who
- Copilot project managers, AI experts, digital transformation managers and Microsoft 365 administrators who must report on the use of Microsoft 365 Copilot licenses (“Copilot Premium”).
- Format
- A web page: the version hosted on nextstart.ai, accessible via a personal link valid for one year, and a version on claude.ai which adds an analysis written by Claude.
- What he calculates
- Active license rates, daily usage, active days, queries, intensity profiles, Word, Excel and PowerPoint usage, applications by department, transitions between profiles from one month to the next, lower usage and detailed record per person.
- Policy
- The files are read in your browser: no data is sent or stored. A pseudonymized mode hides names on the screen and in exports.
- Price
- Free, in exchange for a professional email address. No unsolicited emails.
- Update
- October 2026 edition, Microsoft report verified on October 31, 2026.
- What it doesn't replace
- Neither the exchange with the people concerned, nor the information of your employee representative bodies if you follow individual practice.

A Microsoft 365 Copilot license is expensive, and the question quickly arises in committee: who uses it, for what purpose, and is it making progress? The Microsoft 365 admin center provides the data, but in the form of a raw table, one line per person, without diagnostics or comparison.
We built this analyzer for our Copilot deployment support missions. It reads exports as Microsoft provides them, in French or English, and produces in seconds what previously took several hours of spreadsheet work to obtain.
1. What the analyzer measures
| Indicator | A question to which he responds | Calculation |
|---|---|---|
| Active licenses | Are the paid licenses useful? | Percentage of licenses with at least one active day during the period |
| Daily use | Has Copilot become second nature? | Percentage of licenses active for at least 15 days out of 28 (adjustable threshold) |
| Intensity profiles | Which is intensive, regular, occasional? | Requests reduced to 28 days, adjustable thresholds |
| Word, Excel, PowerPoint | Is Copilot used for production, or only for discussion? | Share of licenses with activity in a production application |
| By direction | Where does adoption fall short? | Each indicator by direction, deviation from the organization highlighted |
| Evolution | Is the deployment progressing? | Comparison of monthly exports: starts, drops, increases in intensity |
The diagnostic automatically classifies the results into strengths, weaknesses and areas to monitor, for the entire organization or for a department compared to the rest of the organization.
2. Exports to prepare
- In the Microsoft 365 admin center, open Reports, then Usage, then Microsoft Copilot, Usage tab.
- Choose the 28-day period and export the details per user using the Export button.
- If the names appear as encrypted identifiers, remove the masking in Organization Settings, Services, Reports, and then export again.
- Optionally, prepare an "Email Address; Department" file for analysis by department, and a 7-day export to identify planned requests.
- Repeat the export every month and upload all the files together: each export becomes a dated photo.
Microsoft does not provide a person's day-by-day history, nor the number of requests per application: the analyzer works with what the report contains, and states this in its "Method and limitations" section.
3. One sheet and one action plan per person
Clicking on a name opens its record: active days and queries compared to its management, applications used with their last used date, abandoned applications, applications that its management uses and has not yet tried, and its journey from one export to another.
- High priority: unused license, disengagement, decline in active days, absence of daily ritual.
- Average priority: too short exchanges, limited use to chat, no production in Word, Excel or PowerPoint, neglected application.
- Opportunity: application to try, person to approach as an ambassador, transition to agents.
Each action is justified by a statistic and formulated concretely, for example, "Word workshop on a real document: Word is used by 56% of management." The list of the lowest usage rates and the complete details are exported as a CSV file along with each individual's action plan.
4. Planned, corrected queries
A recurring query scheduled in Copilot counts as an active day every day, even when the user is no longer using it. As a result, an occasional user appears as a daily user, skewing the entire assessment. The analyzer identifies suspicious profiles (active seven days a week, very few queries per active day) and allows the query to be removed from the calculation.

6. Frequently Asked Questions
Is my data being sent to NextStart.AI?
No. The files are read in your browser and do not leave your computer: no data is sent or stored. In the version on claude.ai, the written analysis sends Claude pseudonymized numbers, never names or addresses, and only if you click the button.
Where can I find the Copilot usage report in Microsoft 365?
In the Microsoft 365 admin center: Go to Reports, then Usage, then Microsoft Copilot, Usage tab. The Export button downloads the details per user. Administrator or report viewer privileges are required.
Why do the names appear in code form?
Microsoft hides names in usage reports by default. An administrator can unhide them in Organization Settings, Services, Reports. Without the names, the overall analysis works, but the department-level reporting does not.
Can we track the evolution over time?
Yes. Export the 28-day report each month and drop all the files together: the analyzer compares the photos, counts the starts and stops, and plots the trajectory of each direction and each person.
Is it permitted to monitor individual Copilot usage?
Monitoring the use of a tool provided by the employer is common practice, but it must be proportionate and transparent: inform individuals, and your employee representatives if the individual monitoring is part of an evaluation process. The analyzer's pseudonymized mode allows for anonymous data collection.
Does the analyzer work for ChatGPT or Claude?
This one is designed for Microsoft 365 Copilot exports. For ChatGPT Business, the ChatGPT Business Usage Analysis Kit performed the same diagnosis using exports from the OpenAI console.
Is access free?
Yes, in exchange for a professional email address that will only be used to send you the access link. No unsolicited emails.
