Generative AI at work: between increased productivity and motivational challenges

The integration of generative artificial intelligence (GAI) into business environments has transformed the way tasks are accomplished. Recent studies have revealed that while GAI improves productivity, it can also decrease employees' intrinsic motivation when performing tasks without technological assistance.

A study of over 3 participants found that using generative AI tools led to significant performance gains. However, these same employees reported decreased motivation and increased boredom when required to complete tasks without AI assistance. This suggests that AI, while effective for some tasks, can impair employee engagement in other areas of their work.

This situation raises questions about how companies can integrate generative AI while maintaining employee engagement and motivation. Rethinking workflows is essential to preserve the elements of work that drive intrinsic motivation. This could include redefining roles, diversifying tasks, and fostering a culture of continuous learning.

Additionally, it's important to recognize that generative AI can change employees' perceptions of the value of their contributions. If certain tasks become easier thanks to AI, employees may experience a diminished sense of accomplishment. To counter this, companies should encourage employees to engage in activities that require critical thinking and human creativity, areas where AI performs less well.

Adopting generative AI also requires careful attention to training and skills development. Employees must be equipped to work effectively with AI, understand its capabilities and limitations, and know when it's best to rely on their own expertise. Targeted training programs can help build employee confidence in using AI and maintain their engagement.

Finally, it is crucial to continuously monitor and evaluate the impact of generative AI on employee motivation. Companies should implement feedback mechanisms to identify areas where AI may be negatively impacting engagement and adjust their strategies accordingly. By balancing the use of AI with initiatives aimed at maintaining intrinsic motivation, organizations can fully leverage the benefits of AI while supporting the well-being and performance of their employees.
