French education in the era of artificial intelligence

Imagine a France where every student, from a very young age, interacts naturally with artificial intelligence, just as they learn to read, write, or calculate. This vision, which may seem futuristic, nevertheless stands out as an essential and necessary development to meet current educational and societal challenges. The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in education is not limited to the use of advanced digital tools: it embodies a true pedagogical revolution where humans and machines collaborate closely.

The key to this revolution lies in the innovative concept of "human-AI co-thinking." Far from being a simple delegation of intellectual tasks to the machine, co-thinking encourages a constructive and critical dialogue between the student and the AI, making it possible to significantly amplify human cognitive abilities while preserving a fundamental role for humans, particularly in the evaluation and validation of the results produced by the AI.

Co-thinking relies on learning AI-specific literacy, essential for deciphering interactions with intelligent systems and subtly detecting the limitations or cognitive biases of the responses they produce. This literacy allows students to develop a unique ability to understand, analyze, and enrich their own thought processes through ongoing interaction with AI.

Implementing such an approach in the education system requires a progression adapted to each level of education, respecting the different stages of students' cognitive development. From the earliest years of schooling, learning co-thinking will be done through fun and intuitive activities, gradually enriched over the educational cycles to integrate complex epistemological and ethical notions.

The role of the teacher is also evolving considerably: from transmitters of knowledge, they are becoming architects of augmented educational experiences, capable of effectively orchestrating interactions between their students and AI. This change requires in-depth continuing education, enabling teachers to master the subtleties of human-AI interactions and adopt an innovative and reflective pedagogical stance.

However, the integration of AI into education raises several major challenges: equity of access to these new technologies, the protection of personal data, the delicate balance between technological innovation and preservation of educational fundamentals, as well as the complex governance of this transformation within a federalist education system.

France has unique assets to successfully achieve this ambitious integration: a solid institutional framework, a tradition of educational excellence, and a recognized ability to manage technological innovations with rigor and pragmatism. By adopting a collaborative approach and creating communities of educational practice around AI, France can become a true global laboratory for augmented, responsible, and ethical education.

This educational transformation, far from being solely technological, is above all human. It must imperatively respect the cognitive autonomy of students and strengthen their critical thinking. The real challenge lies in the ability to use AI as an intellectual partner, enriching learning without ever replacing human judgment. By orchestrating this educational revolution, France will not only follow a global trend: it will open a pioneering path, capable of profoundly redefining what it means to learn and teach in the digital age.
