The meaning of generative AI

At the end of the 19th century, the typewriter profoundly transformed administrative work. It did not eliminate the need to write, but it changed who wrote, how, and how fast. The skills valued evolved: handwriting lost importance, and rapid typing became strategic.

Later, the personal computer replaced the typewriter. Then the spreadsheet marginalized the calculator. Each time, the same mechanism occurred:

  • the repetitive tasks have been automated,
  • some skills have disappeared,
  • de new skills have become indispensable,
  • and the overall productivity increased.

History, therefore, does not speak of a massive disappearance of work, but of shift in human value.

What generative AI really changes

Generative AI marks a further step: for the first time, machines are no longer content with simply executing rules or calculations, they are producing... language, contents, approximate reasoningThey intervene directly in areas previously reserved for the human intellect: writing, programming, analysis, creation.

Recent studies converge: a majority of jobs now include a significant proportion of automatable tasks. But automatable does not mean eliminated. It means that:

  • the jobs will to regroup,
  • the heart of the work will shift towards the Decision making, the creativity, the judgment, the context,
  • Human-AI collaboration is becoming central.

AI doesn't replace a job, it replaces a way of working.

The emergence of new roles, invisible yesterday

Contrary to popular belief, AI doesn't just create technical jobs. It gives rise to hybrid roles:

  • AI systems architects,
  • experts in data quality and governance,
  • designers of human-AI interactions,
  • AI trainers and translators,
  • AI supervisors, evaluators and auditors.

The key skill is no longer just knowing how to do something, but knowing how to... formulate, orchestrate, assess et correct.

A new cycle of accelerated growth

Generative AI acts as a universal acceleratorIn software development, marketing, research, and training, it drastically reduces the time between idea and execution.

This leads to a major phenomenon: projects that were once too expensive, too long, or too complex suddenly become feasible. Organizations can launch more initiatives, experiment more, and iterate faster.

This is not the end of human labor, but a explosion of the field of possibilitiesThe value moves from execution to:

  • the vision,
  • prioritization,
  • a thorough understanding of the needs,
  • ethics and responsibility.

The great bypass: skipping a generation of practices

Because some countries bypassed the era of mainframe computers and moved directly to open systems, AI now makes it possible to skipping entire generations of working methods.

New professionals no longer learn how to work without AI. They learn to work with They design their processes, tools, and mental models by integrating AI from the outset.

For organizations, the question is no longer: Should we adopt AI? but:

Do we want to optimize the old world, or build the next one?

The true meaning of AI

Generative AI is neither a simple tool nor an autonomous threat. It reflects a profound movement: the constant search for a increased cognitive efficiency.

After mechanical force, then computational force, we are entering the era of...intellectual amplification.

The true meaning of AI is not the replacement of humans, but its re setupIt forces us to redefine what constitutes our value:

  • to understand rather than to execute,
  • to decide rather than to implement,
  • to create meaning rather than produce volume.

There was a time for the typewriter, a time for the personal computer, a time for the Internet.

Today is the era of generative AI, and above all, the time to rethink what it means work, learn and create in the age of artificial intelligence.
