Mastering the art of prompting to guide AI

Obtaining relevant responses from a language model depends on the quality of the instructions given to it. Like a well-written contract, each element of the query influences the final result.

The fundamentals of a good prompt

The first rule is to clarify the input: is it a question, a classification task, or a text to complete? Using precise action verbs ("summarizes," "classifies," "generates") helps the model understand exactly what is expected of it.

Constraints play a crucial role: desired length, writing style, output format (JSON, Markdown, table). These tags prevent overly vague or verbose responses and ensure a directly usable result.

The power of examples

Three to five well-chosen examples are usually enough to solidify the desired style. The model identifies the pattern and reproduces it. However, be careful: too many examples can make it rigid and limit its ability to generalize.

Enrich with context

For specialized tasks, providing documentation, manual excerpts, or relevant code transforms the model into a near-expert while reducing hallucinations. This context should precede the final question, with a transition sentence to create logical continuity.

Decompose in order to better rule

When faced with complex requests involving multiple requirements, it's best to break the process down into distinct micro-tasks or chain the steps together. This sequential approach facilitates debugging and clarifies the responsibilities of each step.

Towards advanced workflows

Modern models can plan, self-check, and structure their reasoning. Explicitly asking them to think before responding reduces errors, even if it slightly increases processing time.

Ultimately, designing an effective prompt rests on three pillars: clarity of intent, granularity of examples, and precision of constraints. The more structured the query, the less guesswork the model will have to perform, and the more reliable a partner it will become for your projects.
